AUK’s CAPA Leads the Conversation on Advancing Teaching and Learning through K-12 and Beyond
Duhok, Kurdistan Region – On October 25, 2025, the Center for Academic and Professional Advancement (CAPA) at the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) hosted the annual conference titled K–12 and Beyond under the theme “Advancing Teaching and Learning.” The event brought together educators, academic leaders, researchers, and practitioners to exchange innovative ideas and strengthen the culture of teaching excellence across Kurdistan and the Region.
This year’s theme reflected CAPA’s belief that lasting educational change begins with empowering those who teach. As education systems worldwide adapt to evolving learner needs and the rise of artificial intelligence, the conference offered a platform to rethink teaching practices that make learning engaging, inclusive, and effective.
Unlike traditional lectures or panel-style discussions, K–12 and Beyond centered on interactive, hands-on workshops designed to encourage active participation, reflection, and collaboration. Each session modeled strategies that bridge theory and practice, allowing participants to experience effective learning in action.
The conference featured two keynote speakers: Dr. Zana Ibrahim, Interim President of the University of Kurdistan Hewler (UKH), who presented “Education in Kurdistan: Shifting the Focus from Access to Quality and Innovation”, and Ms. Anna Arakelyan, President of the Armenian English Language Teachers’ Association (AELTA), who delivered “From Content to Competence: Preparing Learners for Life, Not Just Exams.”
AUK faculty and administrators also contributed to the program’s success, as well as facilitators from across the region and abroad, representing institutions such as the American University of Armenia, Edraak (Jordan), Cihan University – Sulaimani, Soran University, and the University of Duhok, as well as local K–12 schools, including the American International School in Duhok.
The success of the event was made possible through the generous support of its sponsors: Taurus Energy, English Book Education, and Chocolate Bar.
Reflecting AUK’s commitment to educational advancement, the conference concluded with the announcement of CAPA’s upcoming Professional Development and Train-the-Trainer Program, inviting educators to continue their lifelong learning journey beyond the conference.
